5. this cozy, shapeless sweater…
img_0162
for keeping me warm this week while we had temperatures in the 40s!

in other news:

it was a long, short week, wasn’t it? around wednesday during school weeks, i start falling asleep on the couch around 7:30 barely able to keep my eyes open through one show, and even with monday off, this week was no exception. the weekend is due. mike’s getting home early today (pizza friday!), and after a week with him working late, it’s going to be so nice to have him home for dinner.

it was a week of sweaters, hats, and heat on in the car with temperatures down in the 40’s. charlie came over to me this morning with the blanket and asked to ‘get cozy’ which is maybe my favorite thing he’s ever said to me. we snuggled for the briefest of moments before it was time to head to school, and it’s made me so look forward to a weekend of ‘getting cozy’ at home with my boys.

my parents are coming down for the month of february and it’s getting SO CLOSE. next week!! i can’t even express how excited i am. i’ve done zero things to prepare, but as long as there is wine and good weather, then all parties will be happy! have a beautiful weekend getting cozy, friends!

LITTLE THINGS THIS WEEK.

  1. this afternoon tea ritual…because decompression after school is a necessity, especially this week.
  2. this sourdough starter…because it’s been 9 days and i’m still at it, resolutions and all that.
  3. this book…because while i’ve already started another, i’m still living in that world.
  4. this chair & the five other just like it…a project completed and enjoyed every single day {details forthcoming}.
  5. this toy cell phone…for jingling suddenly at school and making me laugh and laugh.

This week was long and I felt like I couldn’t see the end of it while we were in it. But now we’re here and I’m having a glass of wine and it’s glorious and I’m happy as I ever was. Have a wonderful weekend friends!

LITTLE THINGS THIS WEEK.

1. this santa garland…img_4921and the little boy who shouts ‘santa! santa!’ every time he sees it.

2. these chunky crayons…img_5026for being easy to wipe of tables, chairs, but not quite so easily off of walls. {i swear, you look away for ten seconds and that’s all it takes!}

3. this tiny salad dressing jar…img_5146because it makes salads at lunch a whole lot cuter.

4. this christmas card…img_4935for being delayed and then suddenly, unexpectedly ready for pick up!

5. these enchiladas and jar of beer…img_4897for being just the thing to soothe my soul.

in other news:

only five more days until i have two whole weeks off with my loves. there’s a mile long list of things to do before mike’s parents arrive next sunday, so we’re going to try to cross somethings off this weekend. a holiday party with friends on saturday, and then the christmas village at our church on sunday is going to make for a busy little weekend. i’m going to fit in some baking of cranberry bread, some granola bars for the week, some serious boy snuggles and we are going to clean, clean, clean the house from top to bottom. it’s going to be a good one, you guys.

LITTLE THINGS THIS WEEK.

1. this tree-scape advent calendar…img_4327because it’s loved just as much this year as last.

2. this sheep refrigerator art…img_4391and the tiny hands who made it at school this week.

3. this collection of things found in my pocket…img_4335when self care, lunch duty, and babies collide.

4. this mason jar…img_4406and the vast expanse of water it has helped me drink this week.

5. this play nativity…img_4341for day 5 of the advent calendar, and for the full hour of entertainment it provided yesterday.

in other news:

this was one of those glorious weeks that passed by so quickly, it’s almost as if it didn’t happen at all. i keep asking myself, was there school on monday? am i sure? there was, it flew, and the week is behind us already.

this weekend, the rest of the christmas decorations are going to be pulled out of the giant chest they live in. it’s our first year in our new house, and i’m itching to decide where things should go.┬áthe christmas tree has been a discussion – the playroom, or the living room – and we haven’t quite settled on it, but one of us is going to reason their way into success.

it was a good, easy week at school. the excitement about our christmas tree in the corner, the book tree in the hallway, twinkle lights on every surface and the wrapped boxes underneath have been highlights in my chats with my students. thanksgiving memories of turkey and stuffing are far behind us. i’m reading the grinch with my kindergarten and first graders, and mike reads it nightly with charlie (‘gwinch! gwinch! ‘lou who!’) and i swear i have it memorized.

it’s the best time of year, friends, i hope you’re soaking up every little moment.

“staring down from his cave with a sour, grinchy frown at the warm lighted windows below in their town. for he knew every who down in who-ville beneath was busy now, hanging a mistletoe wreath.” –how the grinch stole christmas! by dr. seuss.

LITTLE THINGS THIS WEEK.

1. this oversized suitcase…

because it’s borrowed from a friend and fingers crossed, big enough for four.

2. this tiny sound machine…for the (hopefully) extra sleep everyone will get whilst room sharing on our holiday travels.

3. these sweet family stripes from a fairy godmother…

because come December you’ll find us wearing them nightly (I’ve already been cheating by wearing my leggings).

4. this pan of homemade granola bars…

for being ready to wrap up and tuck away for a long day of travel tomorrow.

5. this stack of tiny warm hand-me-down clothes…

for two little boys headed to winter!

in other news:

we’re on vacation!! i’m scurrying around cleaning and throwing things into suitcases haphazardly, consulting my packing lists and intermittent breaks for side-clenchingly funny videos that mike finds on instagram. our flight leaves for indiana at five pm tomorrow and i’m relying on a combination of preparedness by trying to think of all possible scenarios and also prayer. it’s our first flight with both (very mobile) boys, right around bedtime! čśČ i am sure we will come away from it so much wiser than we are now. we are so excited for a whole week with family! what are you up to this weekend, reader? something good, i hope.

LITTLE THINGS THIS WEEK.

1. this collection of medicines…img_2670the signs of a sickness making its’ way through the house and for making my boy moderately more comfortable amidst coughing fits.

2. this teeny tiny tree with twinkling lights…img_2825for adding just the right amount of cheer.

3. this pre-bedtime cookieand the rest tucked away in the freezer to bake at the drop of a hat.

4. this dress found on clearance…and the many many wears she will get the rest of the school year.

5. this project paint…for being the start of a house project that isn’t quite the right shade yet. Back to the drawing board.

in other news:

mike’s taking a turn at home with ben today, and we’re hopeful that he’s going to be back to school on monday. i feel like i’ve cheated the week a little bit by leaving early on tuesday, home wednesday and thursday, and then back to school on friday, which in the elementary school is a weekly holiday. we’re going to take it easy this weekend and hang around home. charlie was coughing more than i like this morning, so i hope the sickness isn’t getting to him now too. fingers crossed, friends.

what are you up to this weekend, reader? whatever it is, i hope you kick your feet up and enjoy it.

LITTLE THINGS THIS WEEK.

1. these clothespins (and the multitude of others out of frame)…for keeping my boys entertained not one, not two, but three nights in a row.

2. these personalized colored pencils…a birthday gift used for writing and (violently) decorating sweet thank you notes from a two year old.

3. these blueberry puffs…for getting us to dinner time.

4. this soft hankie…for the tender care of a cold that i haven’t yet kicked.

5. this creaky old weathered pot…for being the bearer of the corn chowder (with mirepoix!) that we had for dinner two nights this week, and I could’ve had every night. A cold front is coming our way and i am here. for. it.

in other news:

it’s been a long week. my car was broken into at daycare drop-off (if i can even say broken into, it was unlocked) and my wallet and my school laptop were stolen. i feel very foolish for being so trusting of people that i would leave it unlocked. learned my lesson the hard way.

one of my students told me a long story during class the other day about his little brother going missing and then i heard about it on the news and read the story in the paper and let me just say my heart seized up with the fear of it all.

another student has come into school screaming like i’ve never heard a child scream every single day this week, practically manhandled into his classroom and it makes me worry about what that kind of stress does to a child in their little five year old life. another student had emergency surgery for her appendix, more are in crisis of other sorts, and┬ámy gratitude chain, while beautiful and inspiring and so worth the time spent doing it also has brought up some hard conversations about what some of my students really do have to be thankful for. turns out, school might be the number one thing on their list. talk about pressure.

it’s a hard, tough world out there that, at 31, my eyes are just beginning to be opened to, readers. sorry for bringing the moods down a notch, and it should be noted that my week was not without plenty of joyful moments. it just seemed like there were a few too many downs this round.

in more personal news though, i’m starting to feel a little like meg ryan in you’ve got mail when tom hanks brings her daisies for her terrible cold, but you know, less glamorous. i could use some daisies. or just a day to hole up in my house under the comforter and blow my nose all day with a good book. i might do just that this weekend, but with a toddler and a baby┬ácrawling all over me in place of the book. we’re supposed to have cooler weather coming in this weekend with a high of 80 (practically frigid!) so a bit of sunshine and a walk down the street to the park will do us some good too. we have a trip to the store, to church, to the gas station for putting some air in my tires on the list, and all the other joys that the weekend brings.

what are you up to this weekend, reader? whatever it is, i hope you kick your feet up and enjoy it. aren’t we lucky to have that as an option?

love, em

LITTLE THINGS THIS WEEK.

1. these strewn about costumes…

{for still being loved even after the holiday has passed.}

2. this box…

{for providing more entertainment than the gift inside. keep it simple and all that.}

3. this pint sized table…

{and the newly minted 2 year old who sits there.}

4. this dinner made by a little boy for his brother…

{because his sweet spirit warms up my heart.}

5. this perky bloom…

{and the husband who brought it home after working late. ah, romance and somehow having been lucky enough to catch a good one.}

in other news:

breakfast potatoes on saturday (a weekly tradition), church on sunday (a weekly choice), and grocery shopping (a necessity) somewhere in between there are the only things planned for our weekend. crossing my fingers for deep cleaning and long naps, but those aren’t promised. what are you all up to this weekend? whatever it is, i hope you at least kick your feet up for a bit and enjoy it.
